The Voice of Ross Edwards: the style and techniques of an Australian Composer
Amber Thomas
In this session, participants create a motive-based composition which is modelled on the repertoire of Ross Edwards, in addition to including their own musical ideas (within a limited pitch set). There is an emphasis on different 'voices' and groups will use given pitch material to create a composition of varied percussion tone colour, using poly-rhythms and layered ostinati patterns. Musical concepts covered will be: pitch (aeolian mode), texture, rhythm/duration/metre, structure and tone colour. This is designed to be an enjoyable, creative way to introduce secondary students to a composer's style, and prepare them for score reading.
